Full name: Milton Keynes Dons Football Club
Nickname: The Dons
Founded: 2004
Ground: stadium:mk
Capacity: 22, 000
Chairman: Pete Winkelman
Manager: Paul Ince
League: League One
2008-08: League One 3rd

Milton Keynes Dons Football Club (usually abbreviated to MK Dons) are an English professional football club founded in 2004 and based in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. Based at stadium:mk, they will spend the 2009–10 season in Football League One, the third tier of football in England.

The club was relaunched under its current name on 21 June 2004, nine months after the then Wimbledon F.C. moved to Milton Keynes. Milton Keynes Dons is legally a continuation of Wimbledon F.C. However, after negotiation with the Football Supporters Federation, the club agreed to entrust the trophies and memorabilia of Wimbledon F.C. to the London Borough of Merton and to make no claims on the history of Wimbledon F.C. thereafter. This step was taken in part to ensure the recognition of the Milton Keynes Dons Supporters Association by the Football Supporters Federation.

History
The history of Milton Keynes Dons (MK Dons) begins in the late 1990s with Pete Winkelman, a music promoter and resident of Milton Keynes. Winkelman saw an opportunity to build a FIFA-compliant new stadium complex in the town, as part of a large commercial development that included ASDA and IKEA superstores. There were already four non-League football teams in the borough, including Milton Keynes City, who played in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. One option available to Winkelman would have been to invest in one of these local clubs, with the aim of repeating the early success achieved by Max Griggs, founder of the Dr. Martens footwear manufacturer, who had overseen the creation of Rushden and Diamonds from two small clubs in nearby Northamptonshire. However, Winkelman felt it would be easier to convince backers to fund a stadium for a league club rather than a non-League team, and to this end, he began trying to bring in a professional club from another town.

Winkelman began approaching any football clubs that were struggling financially, including Barnet, Luton Town and Queens Park Rangers, without success. However, in Wimbledon F.C., he found a club with owners who were already looking for a new base. He persuaded the directors that a move 62 miles (100 km) north to Milton Keynes might give them the financial boost they wanted. Most of Wimbledon's fans - as well as the Football League - were against such a move.

On 28 May 2002, despite over a year of fan protests against the idea, the Football Association authorised the move to Milton Keynes. Although there have been club relocations in the UK, there had never been such a relocation of a professional club within the English pyramid system, and this move attracted widespread criticism. Those who interpreted the League decision as American-style sports "franchises" gave Wimbledon the disparaging title "Franchise F.C.". Supporters of other teams boycotted games against the club and crowds dwindled to non-league levels. On 5 June 2003, Wimbledon went into financial administration with debts of more than £20 million.

During the 2003-04 season, Wimbledon F.C. was run by the administrators and many of the team's players were sold. At the end of a dismal season, the club was relegated to League One (the new name for the Second Division). During the summer of 2003, the National Hockey Stadium was converted for use as a football stadium, and in September 2003, Wimbledon F.C. moved into the National Hockey Stadium in Milton Keynes. By spring of 2004, Winkelman bought the near-bankrupt club from the administrators.

Supporters club recognition
On 4 June 2005, at the 2005 Football Supporters' Federation "Fans' Parliament" (AGM), the FSF refused the MK Dons Supporters Club membership of the FSF in a debate that, among other arguments, questioned why the Football League had yet to introduce any new rules to prevent the "franchising" of other football clubs in the future. In addition, the FSF membership agreed with the Wimbledon Independent Supporters Association that the Milton Keynes Dons Supporters Association should not be entitled to join the FSF until they give up all claim to the history and honours of Wimbledon F.C. With this in mind, the FSF began discussions aimed at returning Wimbledon F.C.'s honours to the London Borough of Merton and/or AFC Wimbledon.

Shortly afterwards, following heavy criticism for allowing the move, the Football League announced new tighter rules on club relocation.

At its AGM on 5 June 2006, the FSF again considered a motion proposed by the FSF Council to allow MK Dons Supporters Association membership if the honours and trophies of Wimbledon FC were given to the London Borough of Merton and/or AFC Wimbledon. In October 2006, agreement was reached between the club, the MK Dons Supporters Association, the Wimbledon Independent Supporters Association and the Football Supporters Federation. The replica of the FA Cup plus all club patrimony gathered under the name of Wimbledon FC would be returned to the London Borough of Merton. Ownership of trademarks and website domain names related to Wimbledon F.C. would also be transferred to the Borough. As part of the same deal it was agreed that any reference made to Milton Keynes Dons FC should refer only to events subsequent to August 7, 2004 (the date of the first League game of Milton Keynes Dons FC), making it clear that Milton Keynes Dons FC are a new entity independent of Wimbledon FC. As a result of this deal, the FSF announced that the supporters of Milton Keynes Dons FC would be permitted to become members of the federation, and that it would no longer appeal to the supporters of other clubs to boycott MK Dons matches.

On 2 August 2007, Milton Keynes Dons transferred the replica trophies and all Wimbledon FC memorabilia to the London Borough of Merton.

Club History
When the 2004–05 season began, the team were still being managed by Stuart Murdoch. They started the season badly and Murdoch was sacked to be replaced by Danny Wilson. Under their new manager, MK Dons began to improve and they were suddenly looking good enough for survival. They managed to beat the drop from League One on the final day of the season — but only because of Wrexham's 10-point deduction that had been their penalty for going into administration. The following season, MK Dons struggled all year, and were relegated to League Two. Wilson, meanwhile, was sacked.

Wilson's successor for 2006–07 was Martin Allen, who had just taken Brentford to the brink of a place in the Football League Championship. With a new manager taking charge of a team in a new division, MK Dons looked more convincing than they had done in either of the previous two seasons. They looked like serious promotion challengers for much of the season and were in the hunt for automatic promotion right up to the last game. In the end, they finished fourth and had to settle for a play-off place. They suffered a defeat to Shrewsbury Town in the play-off semi-finals and the promotion dream was over. During the 2007 summer break, Allen terminated his contract with MK Dons to take over at Leicester City in an arrangement that lasted just five games before his contract was terminated.

For the 2007–08 season, former England captain Paul Ince took over as manager. MK Dons reached the final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, while topping the table for most of the season. The final was played on 30 March against Grimsby Town — Milton Keynes Dons won 2–0 at Wembley to bring the first professional trophy to Milton Keynes. The club capped the trophy win with the League Two championship, and the subsequent promotion to League One for the 2008–09 season. Following his successes, Ince left at the end of the season to manage Blackburn Rovers.

Ince's replacement was managerial rookie Roberto Di Matteo. MK Dons occupied second position for much of the 2008–09 season, but they lost out to an automatic promotion spot by two points, finishing third behind Peterborough United and Leicester City. They were knocked out of the play-offs by Scunthorpe United, who defeated MK Dons by penalty shootout at stadium:mk. Di Matteo left at the season's end for West Bromwich Albion. His replacement was Ince, who returned a year after leaving.

The Stadium

Stadium MK

Stadium:mk (also known locally as "Denbigh Stadium") is a multi-use stadium in the Denbigh district of Milton Keynes, England. Designed by HOK SVE,[3] it has completed phase one construction by civil engineering company Buckingham Group Contracting. It is used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of Milton Keynes Dons F.C..

The stadium was officially opened on 29 November 2007 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The initial configuration of the stadium uses only the lower tier to hold 22,000, but using the upper tier there is provision to increase the capacity to 32,000 "12 to 18 months" later. When complete the design will comply with UEFA's Elite Stadium specifications and includes a Desso GrassMaster playing surface.

The complex includes the Arena:MK, an indoor arena that will be the home of the Marshall Milton Keynes Lions professional basketball team from 2008.

The stadium was first proposed in May 2002, when Wimbledon FC were given permission to relocate to Milton Keynes from their original home some 60 miles away in South London. It was originally hoped that the new stadium would be ready for the 2004-05 season, but it was to be another three years after this date before the stadium was opened. In the meantime, Wimbledon had played at the National Hockey Stadium and had since changed their name to Milton Keynes Dons.

Training Ground

The club currently uses the public sports facilities at Woughton on the Green for training. The club's academy sides also play their home games here. During the 2005 close season a new plastic-covered artificial training pitch nicknamed 'the bubble' was constructed.

In June 2004, against the recommendations of the Football Association's Independent Commission, Winkelman announced that he was changing the name of Wimbledon FC to Milton Keynes Dons FC. This was not a popular decision - Winkelman had previously promised fans a vote on the issue, and the committee of the official supporters' club had voted unanimously for the word "Wimbledon" to be retained in the name. When the club formally emerged from administration under the new name and ownership on 1 July, Winkelman also announced that he was changing the club's blue and yellow kit for new team colours and a new badge. This change was again implemented without any consultation with supporters. The new badge bore the letters "MMIV", signifying that 2004 was a new start for the MK Dons.

Dons youngsters out of FA Youth Cup :( :(

MK DONS Under 18s had a last minute equaliser disallowed as they slipped out of the FA Youth Cup following a 3-2 third round defeat at Burnley on Wednesday night.

Mike Dove's young Dons had courageously fought back from 3-0 down thanks to 15-year-old Dan Powell's brace at Padiham.

But the Milton Keynes Academy boss was left pig sick as the Dons' 90th minute equaliser was chalked off for offside - just when they thought they had forced extra-time.

Dove told the Citizen: "We had a throw and there were a couple of flick-ons before it was bundled in, we thought it was a perfectly good goal.

"We were all off our feet thinking about extra time but then we saw the flag up.

"I went to speak to the officials afterwards to ask why it was disallowed and they said Powell was on the goal-line and didn't come out.

"But the boys were magnificent in the second half, it was attack after attack from us.

"And to think we had six Under 16s and one Under 15 in the squad, we were very unlucky."

Powell smashed in a fierce strike from the edge of the box in the 38th minute and then made it 3-2 four minutes after the break when he charged down the goalkeeper's kick and the ball flew into the net, before the Dons' late heartbreak.[/QUOTE]

Milton Keynes Dons v Wycombe

MK Dons boss Martin Allen will be without striker John Hastings for the Buckinghamshire derby against Wycombe on Saturday.

The former Tooting & Mitcham forward is still struggling with the slight thigh strain that has kept him out since the FA Cup defeat to Blackpool on December 2.

Defender Sean O'Hanlon is suspended and could be replaced by Paul Mitchell, while Jamie Smith has picked up a knee injury and will definitely miss out.

On-loan Leeds defender Paul Butler will be fit to play after recovering from being knocked out in a clash of heads during the Dons' 4-3 win at Accrington Stanley last Saturday.

Midfielder Gary Smith has resumed full training this week after after a knee injury with Allen confirming that he will be in the squad for the clash against their promotion rivals.

Wycombe's top-scorer Jermaine Easter remains an injury doubt.

The 14-goal striker missed last week's draw with Barnet with the shoulder injury he sustained against Darlington, but he will be given every chance to prove his fitness.

Ian Stonebridge is on standby to partner veteran forward Tommy Mooney in attack once more if Easter fails to make it.

Midfielder Sergio Torres and goalkeeper Frank Talia (both knee) remain Wanderers' only other injury absentees, so Paul Lambert will otherwise choose from the same squad which earned a 1-1 draw against the Bees last time out.

MK Dons 3-1 Wycombe Wanderers :11 :11

Izale McLeod's brace secured MK Dons the honours in the first ever Buckinghamshire derby against 10-man Wycombe.
Skipper Keith Andrews' first goal for the club and McLeod's double earned Dons their third straight win, while Tommy Mooney replied for Wanderers, who had Tommy Doherty sent off late on.

The Dons started brightly and Clive Platt headed Jon-Paul McGovern's teasing cross straight at Jamie Young from 10 yards inside the first minute.

But tempers flared in the seventh minute when Wycombe midfielder Matt Bloomfield was forced off unconscious after being shoved into the advertising boards by Gareth Edds as the pair contested a tackle near the touchline.

Livid Wanderers skipper Tommy Mooney was shown a yellow card for protesting too vehemently in the fracas that followed.

Wycombe appeared rattled from the incident and Lloyd Dyer volleyed a good chance straight at Wanderers' keeper Young before Andrews put the fired-up Dons in front in the 17th minute.

Andrews clipped Dean Lewington's low cross goal-wards at the near post, and the ball deflected off the unlucky Mike Williamson and past Young for Andrews' first goal for the Dons.

Will Antwi went close to equalising for Wycombe in the 24th minute but his close range header from substitute Stefan Oakes deep free-kick was too close to Milton Keynes goalkeeper Lee Harper at his near post, before McLeod doubled the Dons' lead from the penalty spot a minute later.

McLeod picked himself up after he had been chopped down in the box by Williamson to coolly slot his 15th goal of the season straight down the middle from 12 yards.

Yet Mooney handed Wanderers a lifeline when his composed close range finish made it 2-1 in the 31st minute.

Jermaine Easter seized upon Dons defender Drissa Diallo's error to race clear into the box, and he crossed perfectly for the unmarked Mooney to control the ball before despatching it low past Harper from 10 yards.

Wycombe pressed for an equaliser after the break and lively substitute Ikechi Anya's 12-yard angled drive was saved well by Harper at his near post in the 67th minute.

But the Dons threatened on the counter-attack and Lewington crashed a swerving 25-yard drive against the bar in the 73rd minute.

Doherty picked up his second booking in the 80th minute – both for dissent – but Wycombe's 10-men still pressed and the unmarked Easter headed against the post in the 83rd minute.

Yet McLeod grabbed his 16th goal of the season with an exquisite 25-yard curler to seal the win for the Dons three minutes from the end.

Milton Keynes Dons v Rochdale

MK Dons manager Martin Allen will be without defender Drissa Diallo for the visit of managerless Rochdale.

Diallo is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season in the 3-1 defeat of rivals Wycombe last weekend so Allen will be forced into a defensive reshuffle.

Potential replacement Jamie Smith is still some weeks away from a return from his knee injury but captain Sean O'Hanlon is available after suspension and should return to the side.

Allen's in-form side are also boosted by the news striker Scott Taylor is fit to take his place in the squad.

Taylor was knocked unconscious late on in the Wycombe win but has returned to full training and should be on the bench.

Fellow forward John Hastings is out with a thigh strain but Clive Platt has recovered from a dead leg and should be passed fit to partner top scorer Izale McLeod in attack.

Gary Smith made his first appearance for three months as a late substitute against Wycombe after a knee injury and is set to feature again.

Rochdale caretaker manager Keith Hill has promised to make changes for his first game in charge.

Hill has been placed in charge following Steve Parkin's departure last weekend and has admitted that ``fans may be surprised'' by his first selection.

Giant striker Morike Sako will definitely miss out as he serves a one-match suspension after collecting his fifth booking of the season in Parkin's final game in charge, the 1-0 defeat at Hartlepool last Friday.

Left-back Mark Jackson is back in full training after a month out with a foot injury but is short on match fitness and is unlikely to return to the first team until the new year.

Hill, who will be assisted by former Dale defender Gareth Griffiths at the National Hockey Stadium, will be hoping to put an end to a run of three consecutive 1-0 defeats in a bid to strengthen his claim to the managerial vacancy.

MK Dons 2-1 Rochdale

MK DONS moved up to second in the table as Nathan Stanton's 87th minute own goal gifted them their fourth straight win.
Lee Harper's earlier own goal had handed Rochdale the lead, but Izale McLeod's 81st minute strike and Stanton's 87th minute gaffe sealed the Dons' fourth straight win.

Rochdale started brightly and winger Joe Thompson perfectly teed up skipper Gary Jones inside the first minute, but his 22-yard strike flew straight into the grateful arms of Dons goalkeeper Harper.

The Dons looked strangely subdued as an attacking force early on as Dale defended well, with Izale McLeod's scuffed effort from a difficult angle the high-flying hosts' only chance of the first half.

Dale continued to dominate possession and lone striker Glen Murray's towering far post header from Alan Goodhall's cross was plucked out of the top corner by Harper in the 29th minute.

Milton Keynes upped the tempo after the break and Lloyd Dyer raced onto a long ball three minutes after the re-start but his 12-yard angled drive was saved well by Rochdale keeper Matthew Gilks.

At the other end, John Doolan smashed a decent 22-yard chance high over the bar before curling another 25-yard effort straight at Harper.

But Rochdale continued to press and Harper's unfortunate own goal handed Dale the lead in the 57th minute after the Dons could only half-clear a corner.

Harper initially punched the ball clear of the danger zone but it was recycled across to William Mocquet, whose low deflected 10-yard drive rebounded off the post and into the net off goalkeeper Harper's back.

The fired-up Dons battled back and the unmarked Aaron Wilbraham half-volleyed Jon-Paul McGovern's teasing free-kick wide from close range before Dyer drilled the ball into the side-netting from a difficult angle in the 72nd minute.

Dale threatened on the counter-attack and Callum Warburton almost made it 2-0 after turning Dons defender Paul Butler inside out, but his stinging 12-yard drive was saved well by the diving Harper in the 76th minute.

But McLeod equalised for the Dons when he raced onto Wilbraham's flick and drilled low past Gilks from the edge of the box in the 81st minute.

And then Dale defender Stanton inadvertently poked substitute Scott Taylor's flick over his own keeper's head from 20 yards to gift Dons victory three minutes from the end.

Torquay United 0-2 MK Dons

MK DONS bagged their fifth straight win for the first time since their move to the city as they eased to a 2-0 Boxing Day win at lowly Torquay.
Clive Platt's 28th minute Christmas cracker put the Dons in front and Izale McLeod's 39th minute penalty stretched the in-form Dons' winning run to keep the heat on League Two table-toppers Walsall.

Torquay started brightly and Jamie Ward skinned Sean 'O Hanlon down the left in the fourth minute but his dangerous low cross across the face of goal was hacked behind by Dean Lewington with Gulls striker Chris McPhee lurking behind.

The in-form Izale McLeod had the Dons' first half-chance of the match when his snap-shot from the edge of box flew just wide two minutes later.

McLeod thought he'd won a penalty when he was brought down by Stephen Reed right on the corner of the box in the 11th minute but the referee awarded a free-kick, which came to nothing.

At the other end the stretching Stev Angus toe poked over the bar from four yards after the Dons' defence failed to deal with Adam Murray's 17th minute corner.

McLeod should have opened the scoring for the Dons in the 20th minute but after Dean Lewington's swerving 30-yard drive had only been parried by Gulls keeper Nathan Abbey, McLeod amazingly blasted the loose ball over the bar from four yards.

But Milton Keynes didn't have to wait long to break the deadlock and Platt ended his seven game goal drought to put them in front in the 28th minute.

Platt wriggled free of Gulls defender Lee Andrews in the box before smashing an angled 10-yard drive inside the near top corner.

And then McLeod grabbed his 18th goal of the season from the penalty spot to put the Dons 2-0 up in the 39th minute.

McLeod picked himself up after he had been brought down in the box by Stev Angus to coolly send Abbey the wrong way from the spot.

Torquay's Matt Hockley should have made it 2-1 but he fired a loose ball wide from 10-yards under no pressure four minutes before the break.

The lively McLeod was replaced by Scott Taylor in the 54th minute and it seemed to hand Torquay the initiative as the hosts pinned the Dons back in search of a way back into the game.

But the Dons defended resolutely in a second half of few chances to comfortably see out the game, with Platt and Aaron Wilbraham both coming close to making it 3-0 in the closing stages.

Torquay: Abbey (Horsell 83), Andrews, Reed (Hill 46), Hockley, Ward (booked 20), Mansell, Motteram (Robertson 59), Angus, Woods (c) (booked 52), McPhee, Murray. Subs: Horsell, Robertson, Hill, Villis.

MK Dons: Harper, Lewington, Butler, O'Hanlon, Diallo, Dyer (G. Smith 86), Andrews (c), Wilbraham (booked 32), McGovern, Platt (Edds 86), McLeod (Taylor 54). Subs: Baines, Taylor, Mitchell, Edds, G. Smith.

Referee: Keith Stroud.

Attendance: 2,715 (183 Dons fans).

Milton Keynes begin rise from Wimbledon's ashes

The club formerly known as Wimbledon have suffered a fall almost as dramatic as their rise through the divisions in the 1980s but the appointment of Martin Allen as Milton Keynes Dons manager in the summer has arrested their slump. Five successive victories, the latest away to Torquay United yesterday, has left them in second place in League Two.

Milton Keynes, who suffered their third relegation in seven seasons last May, won 2-0 through goals by Clive Platt and Izale McLeod, the latter’s eighteenth of the season in all competitions coming from a penalty. That left Torquay at the foot of the table after 15 league games without a win.

Walsall remain top of the table after their two Wrights did not make for the wrong result at home to Shrewsbury Town. Tommy Wright, the striker, was sent off for a two-footed tackle on Shaun Drummond in the 32nd minute but Mark Wright, the midfield player, scored the only goal of the game shortly after half-time when his intended cross floated into the net.

Wycombe Wanderers had won their previous away match against Charlton Athletic in the Carling Cup but yesterday they succumbed 2-1 to Swindon Town at the County Ground, with Jermaine Easter scoring their goal, as he had done at the Valley. Swindon are fourth, one place behind Lincoln City, who also recorded a 2-1 home win, against Boston United.

Macclesfield Town continued to warm up nicely for their FA Cup third round tie away to Chelsea by maintaining their resurgence under Paul Ince, who took over in late October with the team seven points adrift at the bottom of the table. A 3-0 win away to Chester City was their fourth victory in five league matches and lifted them from the foot of the Football League.

Rochdale, who sacked Steve Parkin as manager shortly before Christmas, also moved one point above Torquay by coming from 2-0 down at home to Wrexham to draw 2-2.

Peacock 31

Lee Peacock's first-half goal ended the Dons run of six consecutive wins as Swindon completed a league double over MK Dons.

Peacock's scrambled goal from a corner on the half-hour was the only one in a tense encounter between two of the division's favourites for promotion.

Dons were denied an equaliser late on when Izale McLeod's effort was ruled out for offside having already seen his first-half penalty saved by Swindon 'keeper Phil Smith.

After an impressive second-half performance on Saturday, Allen kept faith with the side that took three points at Chester as the Dons went looking for a seventh win on the bounce in League Two.

For the visitors, Peacock was declared fit to play having been a doubt before kick-off while Saturday's saviour against Notts County Michael Timlin continued in midfield.

Dons were immediately on the front foot, taking the game to their opponents with the belief of a side on such a hot streak. Ever the catalyst for a Dons attack, Jon-Paul McGovern seemed to find space where none was available and after volleying over on the stretch from a sliced clearance, he started to orchestrate proceedings.

Maturing into his midfield role with every game he plays, Aaron Wilbraham was giving Swindon plenty to think about with late bursts into the box although he was having to work hard with Keith Andrews to keep Timlin under wraps as Swindon threatened on the counter.

The game had real pace to it, both sides eager to get on with things when stoppages occured - making for a breathless half of football. The Dons territorial advantage might have justified them taking their lead and they came within a whisker of doing so through the marauding Wilbraham. With a clever change of feet in the centre circle, he left Michael Pook on his backside before driving into the penalty area. The space appeared, Wilbraham kept going and eventually drove in a a left-footed shot from 15 yards that shaved the outside of Smith's far post.

Swindon had yet to force a save from Lee Harper but in Christian Roberts they had a livewire up front who was causing problems by dropping deep to collect possession. Their first genuine chance resulted in them taking the lead on the half hour, when Timlin's inswinging corner was not cleared by the Dons defence and Peacock scrambed it home from close range.

The Dons response was immediate and when Clive Platt flicked on Drissa Diallo's long throw, Wilbraham hooked in a right-footed shot that Smith wonderfully clawed out of the goal having had to change to direction quickly.

But if Swindon owed their goalkeeper a pat on the back for that one, they were further indebted to him just a minute later when he denied McLeod. The Dons striker turned in the penalty area after controlling a pass from Wilbraham and as he went down under the challenge of Jerel Ifil, referee Clive Penton pointed to the spot.

Having seen his penalty at Chester saved before Platt slammed in the rebound, McLeod felt confident enough to take on the responsibility but Smith plunged low to his right to keep the Dons' striker at bay.

As it had done at Chester, the miss seemd to fire McLeod and as he rampaged around trying to atone, he had two further shouts for spot-kicks waved away.

Try as they might, the Dons were finding Swindon a tough nut to crack after the break and could have conceded a second had Roberts' 35-yard free-kick dipped under the bar. The introduction of Gareth Edds and Gary Smith just before the hour mark underlined the Dons' determination to carve out an opening but none seemed forthcoming.

Swindon's defence, marshalled by the impressive Ifil, looked like it was going to take some beating and as the Dons poured forward trying to provide the suitable piece of magic the possibility of a fatal counter attack increased. Had Harper not been switched on with 73 minutes played the game would have been over, but the Dons 'keeper made a fantastic point-blank save from Ricky Shakes after he had been teed up by Roberts.

Then with 15 minutes to play, the Robins defence was finally breached when McGovern drove in a half-volley from distance, Smith could only parry and McLeod was razor-sharp to tap into the empty net. The Ground erupted with relief only to have its lava cooled by the assistant's flag as the search for the equaliser continued.

Having been so solid for 87 minutes, Swindon very nearly shot themselves in the foot at the death when Smith and Williams went for the same clearance but as McLeod seized on the loose ball, Vincent was back to block his shot.

With five minutes of injury time to play the siege began, Butler thrown forward as an emergency striker as Swindon desperately clung to what they had. Edds saw a shot deflected just wide and Scott Taylor had a last ditch effort blocked after McLeod had seen another penalty appeal turned down but Swindon clung on to end the Dons run and reduce the gap between the sides to just a point.

NEW DEAL FOR ALBY

http://www.mkdons.premiumtv.co.uk/ja...3074078,00.jpg

Milton Keynes Dons are delighted to announce that Aaron Wilbraham has agreed a new contract with the club.

The 27-year-old has shaken hands on a deal to keep him in Milton Keynes until 2009 after a fantastic first half of the season.

Wilbraham has been converted from big striker to all-action, attacking midfielder under manager Martin Allen, who has rewarded the former Stockport and Hull man for his outstanding contribution this term.

Playing in midfield and attack, Wilbraham has nine goals in 27 appearances this season including a fantastic double against Barnsley to set up the Dons League Cup clash with Tottenham earlier this season.

The club have also taken up one-year option on the contract of young defender Sam Page. The Dons academy product made his Football League debut against Grimsby Town and has impressed Allen with his warrior-like spirit and committed performances for the youth and reserve teams.

Meanwhile, winger Nicky Rizzo has agreed a one-month loan deal at Grimsby. The 27-year-old has been given the chance to join Alan Buckley's side to get some first team football.

Дано успеят с новия контракт, че ще ги намразя ако продадат най-добрия ни играч.

Walsall are currently five points clear of the Dons at the top of League Two but the superb recent form of Martin Allen's side has seen them reduce the gap considerably.

The fixture has been moved from Saturday 24 March to Sunday 25 of March and will take the 4pm prime time viewing slot. There are no Premiership fixtures that weekend due to England's Euro 2008 qualifier in Israel.

BUTLER AND HARPER SIGN

http://www.mkdons.premiumtv.co.uk/ja...3074400,00.jpg

Milton Keynes Dons are delighted to confirm the signings of goalkeeper Lee Harper and defender Paul Butler until the end of the season.

Both players have enjoyed successful loan spells prior to the new year and have helped the club to a record six consecutive league wins.

Manager Martin Allen has struck deals with both Harper, 35, and Butler, 34, to keep them in Milton Keynes and make use of their considerable experience in the club's push for promotion.

Harper has been released from his contract with Northampton Town while Butler has been released by Leeds United.

Harper Sets His Sights

http://www.mkdons.premiumtv.co.uk/ja...3074401,00.jpg

Dons 'keeper Lee Harper has targeted automatic promotion after signing a deal to keep him in Milton Keynes until the end of the season.

Harper has been in outstanding form for the Dons during a three-month loan period from Northampton Town and has kept seven clean sheets since arriving in October.

And the former Arsenal and Queens Park Rangers stopper says the setup at the club convinced him to accept manager Martin Allen's offer.

He said: "I'm really pleased to be joining permanently. I had a lot of friends at Northampton and I enjoyed my time there but the gaffer here has given me the chance to come down here and play some football. He has a great bunch of lads here and we have done well recently.

"The way the gaffer does things here is top quality. Travelling to away games, the training ground facilities, what we eat, preparation for the games, everything is just top drawer. Obviously playing was very important to me but, with the gaffer, everything is done properly and that was a big thing as well.

"From my first game against Walsall I could see we were more than capable of beating teams in this division. We had a blip against Darlington but even then we had plenty of chances in that game. We went on a good run and then I thought on Monday we battered Swindon for 90 minutes, but you are going to get those games in football. We'll probably win a lot of games this season without playing that well so you just have to take those."

But in spite of the defeat, Harper insists the players Allen has at his disposal means there can only be one target for the club this season.

"The priority for us has to be promotion and, with the squad the gaffer is assembling, I don't see any reason why we cannot achieve that," Harper added.

"We have signed Paul Butler in defence so with the likes of Keith Andrews in midfield and Izale McLeod up front we have a very solid core to the side. I will try to continue to add my experience to the team and keep a few more clean sheets.

"We haven't achieved anything yet but I will be doing my part to ensure we can get to where we want to be. It is going to take an awful lot of hard work but I am sure we can achieve it."

LEON JOINS WYCOMBE

Milton Keynes Dons can confirm that defender Leon Crooks has joined Wycombe Wanderers for a nominal fee.

The 21-year-old signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Chairboys on Friday keeping him there until summer 2009.

He will be immediately available for Paul Lambert's side for their home game against Rochdale on Saturday, but will be cup-tied for Tuesday's League Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea.

MARTIN'S FRIDAY UPDATE

Good afternoon,

It has been a very, very busy few days of negotiations, plotting and planning.

I believe it is good for this club that both Paul Butler and Lee Harper have signed short-term deals to stay with us through to the end of the season. Both have done very well and both have had interest from other clubs at higher levels so I am relieved and pleased that they have committed to us.

I started negotiations with Aaron Wilbraham back in November but things had to be put on hold whilst I had important and testing times at home. Aaron has worked very hard at his game and adjusted comfortably to play in central midfield without a problem. He is a man's man and I am convinced that he will continue to improve and develop in to a real player. He has signed for two more seasons.

This week, I have spoken to Sam Page and informed him that we will be taking up the option on the second year of his contact. That boy has trained so hard on his individual programmes, done well whilst out on loan and he is one, with his attitude and desire, that could make the breakthrough in the longer term.

I felt the squad size was too big which is often frustrating for the players not even getting into the squad. Those players that I have let go deserve the opportunity to move on and play, I know they can go on and do very well and I hope they do.

In an ideal world, you would like to keep them all. However, the wage bill was getting too high and I had to balance things out. On top of that, some of our younger players will now get the opportunity to play in our reserve team and we will see if they can progress as professionals and into the first team squad. Their way forward was blocked by having so many players which again, for them, was very frustrating.

Jamie Smith will hopefully play in our reserves on Tuesday night at Ipswich and John Hastings is 50/50 for that game. Of course, when they come back it will give us further options to choose from.

After bringing in so many players in the summer, I knew by Christmas and this window I would be reviewing the whole playing side. It's no good sitting on the fence and dilly dallying, you have to be positive and decisive and all these decisions have been made with guidance and advice from my staff and not taken lightly.

I will not comment on speculation. For me, things should be kept private between two clubs until the deal is done. Leaks of information and confidentiality I find disappointing, frustrating and annoying.

This weekend, we will be training early at Woughton and all the staff will be out watching matches, building up our knowledge of what is about. There is no room or time for complacency or sentimentality - it's a tough, cut-throat business that we want to progress in.

Take care

Martin

LINCOLN GAME STILL ON

With just over three hours to go before kick-off, tonight's League Two fixture against Lincoln city is still on.

Despite wet weather over the weekend forcing several games to be postponed, as the situation stands tonight's game will go ahead as planned.

The pitch will be subject to an inspection on the arrival of referee Russell Booth but is expected to be given the green light.

Further details will be published on mkdons.com as soon as they are released.

Milton Keynes Dons v Lincoln City
07/01/07

Paul Butler will be missing from the MK Dons line-up when fellow League Two promotion hopefuls Lincoln visit the National Hockey Stadium.

The former Leeds defender, who last week made his loan move from Elland Road permanent, is suspended after picking up a fifth booking of the season against Swindon.

Full-back Jamie Smith and striker John Hastings are still sidelined through injury, although both have been pencilled in for a midweek run-out with the reserves as they build up their fitness.

Smith has been out since November with a knee injury and Hastings has been struggling with a thigh problem.

Lincoln will be forced into at least one change after Shane Nicholson's loan spell came to an end.

Nicholson has returned to Chesterfield while fellow loanee Mat Birley, who was an unused sub against Macclesfield last week, has gone back to Birmingham.

On-loan Nottingham Forest striker Spencer Weir-Daley will hope for a full Imps debut after his cameo role from the bench at Moss Rose.

Defender Paul Mayo could be in line for a start after recovering from the groin injury which has restricted his appearances of late.

Move to Milton Keynes

Wimbledon's relatively low attendances, and the large number of rival clubs in London, had meant that Wimbledon could not enjoy the high gate receipts received by many other Premiership clubs. With the team homeless after the closure of Plough Lane, throughout the 1990s the club's directors mooted the idea of moving away from London entirely to a more profitable location, much to the anger of the fans. Dublin, Belfast and Cardiff were considered as potential new homes, before the directors settled on Milton Keynes (which had a number of non League Football teams) as the best opportunity.

Such a move (over 70 miles) was unprecedented in English football. The club's fans saw the move as akin to the American sports "franchise" system, a concept unknown in English football; the traditional view of a football club is that it is an important part of the community and local fabric, rather than simply a business. Despite the ongoing and highly vehement opposition of the club's fans, and many other clubs' fans who held sympathetic views, on May 28, 2002 the club was given permission by the FA to relocate to Milton Keynes. The affair caused Wimbledon F.C to be nick-named pejoratively as "Franchise F.C."

Many of the club's fans, angered at the move and the removal of their team, founded their own club AFC Wimbledon, in 2002. Despite having to start at the 8th level of the football pyramid, AFC Wimbledon enjoys very sizeable support from former Wimbledon F.C. fans. The club currently plays in the Isthmian League Premier Division, having already achieved two successive promotions in its short history.

2002-03 was Wimbledon F.C.'s last full season at Selhurst Park. With most fans having by now deserted the club in protest, the average attendance at Selhurst Park fell to fewer than 3,000. Murdoch's team still managed to secure 10th place in Division One, the strike partnership of Neil Shipperley and David Connolly managed a total of almost 50 goals between them. After further delays, they began playing in Milton Keynes early in the following season. However, before the move itself took place (nearly a year after the FA Commission's decision to approve the move on the 28 May 2002), Wimbledon F.C. went into financial administration with debts of more than £20 million. Part of the reason for the increasing debts was that football supporters were boycotting games following the controversial decision to allow the move to Milton Keynes.

2003-04 was a disastrous season for Wimbledon. After the move to Milton Keynes, attendances improved only marginally. But, with the Administrator selling off the best players, nothing could disguise poor league form which saw the club relegated in bottom place after 33 defeats - the joint second record for the most league defeats in English football history. Only Doncaster (34 defeats) have lost more games in a league season (when they were relegated to the Conference in 1998).

After the end of the season, Wimbledon F.C finally cut all existing ties to their home town and were renamed Milton Keynes Dons..

Сега вече ясно ли е коя "луда банда",коя е ;)

А защо "Crazy Gang" или "Лудата Банда"

The Crazy Gang is a nickname coined by the UK media to describe the Wimbledon football team of the 1980s.

The name, originally that of a group of British comedy entertainers popular in the 1940s, was coined because of the often eccentric and boisterously macho behaviour of Wimbledon's players, who were in the habit of playing outrageous practical jokes on each other and on the club's manager, Dave Bassett. Additionally, their playing style was often accused of being basic and unsophisticated and their general approach to the game as amateurish, but the team was nonetheless very successful and the joking behaviour undoubtedly bred an intensely close team spirit.

Regardless of the criticism, or perhaps because of it, the club thrived and within only a few years, they won promotion from the bottom of the Football League to the very highest level, without ever changing either their playing style or their "us against the world" attitude.

Although the club had encouraged its players in this behaviour since the early 1980s, the nickname did not really become widespread in use, beyond the players themselves, until 1988 when, against all expectations, Wimbledon won the FA Cup by beating highly talented favourites Liverpool 1-0, with goalkeeper Dave Beasant saving a penalty during play. At the final whistle, BBC TV commentator John Motson said the (clearly pre-prepared) line: "The Crazy Gang have beaten the Culture Club!". The name caught on nationally, began to appear frequently in newspaper reports, and was often used in TV coverage of the club.

The likes of Dennis Wise, John Fashanu, Vinnie Jones and Lawrie Sanchez are often considered as some of the high profile members of the 'crazy gang', although the club's first ever full-time apprentice, Wally Downes, is normally cited as the founder, being an inveterate practical joker.

It is equally difficult to determine precisely when the term fell out of use. However, as Wimbledon became more established in the top strata of English football, their style of play necessarily became more advanced, and their bizarre behaviour was no longer so unexpected. Indeed, the club itself began to use the nickname in its official publications as a marketing tool, to the extent that the name even appeared as a small badge on the team's playing shirts. By the mid 1990s, most of the 1988 FA Cup winning team were no longer at the club and the newer, younger players were used to a more mature and professional atmosphere. The name simply became inappropriate as a description, although the club continued to use it for some years to promote itself commercially.
